Page 3 of 8 Area Studies Seminar (PLSC 437) 4 Semester/6 Quarter Credits 60 Hours
The interdisciplinary Area Studies Seminar introduces students to the history, society, politics, art, economics, geography, and cultural aspects of the host country. The aim of the course is to help students understand the institutions and ideologies of the host country and to gain an appreciation of the historical and contemporary forces shaping the lives of its inhabitants.
The seminar is led by instructors from the host institution and from the professional community who are local experts and, together, create a course not easily duplicated in North America. In some programs, classes feature special topics in business, environmental studies, international relations or nationalist identity. Although each class has required readings and assignments, all emphasize interaction with the host culture through personal experience and analysis. Class contact hours include instruction time during educational excursions and field visits.
